A Summer Sensation: Malaysia, Your Tropical Holiday Home

Forget the “beach bum” stereotype. There is much more to Malaysia than meets the eye. Sure, you can chill out amidst the swaying palm trees on the sand, suntan by the shore, and surf across the shimmering sea, but Malaysia is by no means a one-note destination. Whether you’re a solo adventure seeker or you’re planning for some family fun in the sun, this vibrant country has something to cater for any style of travel.

Dive deeper and discover a destination as diverse as its delicious cuisine! Malaysia’s got your back — just bring the sunblock!

A Buffet of Beach Bliss

Craving some sand therapy and vitamin sea? There’s plenty to choose from in Malaysia, and here’s the sweet bonus: many are within a stone’s throw of the city! Pack a picnic basket (and maybe a tent for some stargazing magic and a peaceful slumber under the night sky) — Sepang is just 1.5 hours away for that quick city detox!

One beach is just for beginners? Head south 2 hours to Melaka, an underrated gem of coastal bliss with a (sea)side of cultural treasures. Immerse yourself in the vibrant Kristang community at the Portuguese Settlement in Ujong Pasir and savour fresh seafood. Don’t miss annual affairs such as Festa San Pedro on 29 June! Next, check out the monumental marvel of the Melaka Straits Mosque at Pulau Besar which seemingly floats on the water, and the Instagram-worthy Klebang sand dunes for that perfect shot!

If you’re thirsty for more, check out Teluk Batik in Lumut, Perak (2.5 hours) and Teluk Cempedak in Kuantan, Pahang (3 hours), where even more fanta-seas await.

Not feeling the sand between your toes? Don’t sweat it and go high! You’ll be surprised to know that Malaysia is also home to some cool climate, with Genting Highlands under 1.5 hours away from Kuala Lumpur. Genting is a hotspot for entertainment with a thrilling theme park, dazzling casinos, and international restaurants such as Burger & Lobster and Wolfgang’s Steakhouse by Wolfgang Zwiener.

At 3.5 hours away, Cameron Highlands is a happy place for families. Pick your own strawberries, ride ponies, take in the soothing sights and smells of a lavender field, harvest honey from a bee farm, take a sip of tea at the BOH Plantation, and shop at local farmers markets — you can really do it all in one place! That’s not all: Nature lovers can also take a hike up the mystical Mossy Forest for some Lord of the Rings vibes.

Shop Til’ You Drop

Looking for a small memento to remember Malaysia by? Bargain hunters can take a stroll down Petaling Street (recently named the 6th coolest street in the world!), Central Market, and Jalan Masjid India Market. These treasure troves are overflowing with little trinkets and souvenirs waiting to fly home with you. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, join the vibrant sea of colourful umbrellas at Chow Kit Market, where in addition to dry market goods, the freshest local produce are also on offer. Brush up on your haggling skills, it’s gonna be a fun ride!

Get a breather away from the heat by heading indoors for some retail therapy with a gorgeous view! Suria KLCC overlooks a sprawling park, which features the magical Lake Symphony. Prepare yourself for a light show extravaganza with over 150 water-dancing fountains. (Pro tip: check the showtimes before you go!)

And of course, when the doors to 8 Conlay’s retail podium opens, expect a very unique take on shopping that the city has never seen before.

Gung-ho for Greenery

Being confined within four walls not your cup of tea? Get lost — in the lush rainforests right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur! A relatively new but popular park is Taman Tugu, where you can trek various trails and participate in weekly activities such as zumba classes, exchange plants with green thumbed friends, and unleash your kids’ inner artists at painting classes!

Check out our list of green spaces around the city to chill out in.

If you want the full experience, take a 3-hour road trip to Taman Negara Pahang where you can take it all in. Conquer Gunung Tahan, the highest mountain in West Malaysia (warning: not for the faint-hearted!), visit villages of the indigenous peoples, go fishing, observe the local flora and fauna, and more.

A Feast of Flavours

Speaking of cups of tea (and coffee), stick around downtown Kuala Lumpur for a cafe crawl. New cafes pop up so often that you’ll be all hopped up on caffeine! From aesthetic cafes that will spruce up your Instagram grid to Australian-style breakfast joints and specialty dessert spots for a sweet ending, there will never be a shortage of spaces to park yourself!

Check out websites such as Eat Drink KL, KL Foodie, and The Smart Local Malaysia for their monthly recommendations. Ours for June: Grumpy Bagels in Jalan Imbi where you can sink your teeth into the classics or any of their experimental flavour combos, Sakanoue Café at LaLaport Bukit Bintang City for melt-in-your-mouth kakigori (Japanese shaved ice), and Neighbour Club, a new café in Chinatown for your caffeine fix, including creative coffee concoctions like the Kaya Butter Coffee.

And there you have it: your entire itinerary for your summer trip to Malaysia, sorted!
